This fox had been kept in this tiny cage for at least two weeks. Taken illegally from the wild, he was then displayed for sale at the Sunday market. His price - $200.
Luckily there are laws and procedures for local wildlife, and it is illegal to take them from the wild or offer them for sale. It is often extremely difficult to get the action we need to rescue these animals, but for this fox a great group of compassionate people helped get him from that terrible market.
The animal protection and welfare law would regulate all places selling animals, define what animals can be kept as pets, and make it much easier to act when animals like this end up for sale. (link to the law page)
We collected the fox from the Ministry of Agriculture early Sunday, made sure he was healthy and able to eat, and he was set free in the protected Chouf reserve.
He couldn't run fast enough away from the cage and people!
